Hi Stephen,
Thanks for that. It turned out this was a hardware issue. After testing
the remote with a digital camera to make sure it was working I turned my
attention to the IR receiver.
I noticed that the chassis around the PCI slot where the card is located
was partially blocking the port for the IR receiver causing it to feel
like it was properly in place when in fact it wasn't!
A bit of a wiggle (technical term) of the PCI card did the trick. I
can't believe it took me so long to work that out!
Anyway, now it works, as you said the NOVA-T setup seems about the
closest but it's not perfect I'll have to fiddle with it.
I don't seem to be getting the udev issue, but thanks for the advice,
I'll bear it in mind if I need it.
