Are you using Mythbuntu 9.10? If so, then there was probably a lircd
running already. Did you shut it down first? I think it would be
better to use the Mythbuntu Backend Setup to configure lirc and
restart the daemon rather than running it manually. If there is not
the correct setup option for a Nova-S Plus remote, then pick something
as close as you can get (eg another Hauppauge Nova) and manually
adjust the /etc/lirc files after that.
Once you get the hardware responding, there is another little
complication. I have a Hauppauge Nova TD-500 PCI card, and I had to
add a udev rule so that the device event number did not change each
boot. This is my /etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules file (turn off word
wrap):

You will probably need something similar.
