[mythtvnz] lirc and myth

I think I had missed the i <info> button, thats helped heaps. Is it a
must to set transcode to happen before the record, or can it be
scheduled for say 2am?
I'm reasonably up with mysql, so knew it wasn't lost. I'm stuck on
setting up the DVD, in fact I was hoping mythtv simplified the whole dvd
authoring thing with disk menus and the like.

Mythtv has just saved our bacon with the 2yr old, our 29" Sony has
chosen now to drop its lopti and is probably either heading for a repair
or its lcd 22" replacement time. Having TV available via mythtv frontend
on the laptop was brilliant.

I had the remote working at one point but it had killed the driver (or i
thought it had) for the ivtv (Wintvpvr350) pci card and the tv receive
had failed. The whole installation has been interesting, but I cant
really find a good explanation of how lirc and its modules work so as to
understand what Im doing. I can compile and install the modules ok, and
they show up in lsmod, but nothing happens at the irw command and I
don't think I have the device setting right in the hardware.conf.
