[mythtvnz] help - lost my mythtv database

I wonder if anyone might have some suggestions for a wee problem i'm
having...

A couple of days ago, I copied a large video file to my home directory -
completely forgetting that my home directory lives on my rather small
'/' partition. Within seconds i had filled up / and things rapidly went
downhill from there.

I rebooted, and deleted the offending file, however neither the backend
nor frontend can connect to the database. Mythtv-setup was also unable
to connect to the database.

My first thought was to run 'optimize_database.pl', however that was
unable to see the database. I decided to reset the database password,
so i then did:
    $mysql -u root mysql

and then "update user set password=PASSWORD('mythtv') where user='mythtv'.

no matter what i try, mythtv-setup is unable to login to the database.
I'm trying variations of:
    database = mythconverg / mythconverge / mythtv / mysql
    username = mythtv / root / blank
    password = mythtv / blank /

but i just can seem to connect to the database. I've still got load of
random things to try out, but thought i'd just see if anyone an idea of
what to do.

Cheers
Mark
