If you have a NVIDIA video card and the latest drivers then it quite easy. I 
have a 50inch Sony 3LCD TV and all I use is:

Modes      "1280x720_50"  which is built in Display Mode for NVIDIA drivers.

(II) NVIDIA(0): Assigned Display Device: DFP-0
(II) NVIDIA(0): Validated modes:
(II) NVIDIA(0):     "1280x720_50"
(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1280 x 720
