First try starting X in full verbose mode to confirm the lack of EDID.

startx -- -logverbose 6

Then look in the X log file and you should see the EDID data. I've got
lots of customers with DVI->HDMI cables and if there is an issue getting
EDID it usualy means a faulty cable.

One thing to watch for is some screens lie about their EDID data, for
example only providing 60Hz modelines.
