Palmer Building, University of Reading RG6 6UR

Complex Systems in Science and Society

Professor Robert MacKay FRS, University of Warwick and IMA

This talk is being given by the President of the Institute of
Mathematics and its Applications.

The world around us is complex: it has many interdependent components. Mathematics is
the key to understanding, predicting, controlling and designing complex systems.
I will describe how mathematics gives power to the popular concepts of emergence,
tipping points and nudging, and discuss the potential of complex systems science for
engineering and technology.

This event is free of charge and open to all, with refreshments at 19.00.
