Don't forget that there is no requirement for anything on the net to 
respond to ping ... it's possible that the DNS server you're pinging 
won't respond. Check from another connection elsewhere to confirm.

If you can resolve names, you're talking. Use traceroute :-) or mtr, if 
you have that installed/available.
