Should've mentioned that applying something to the front plate by using 
epoxy or varnish as glue and protective layer obviously requires a 
substrate material that:

A) is chemically compatible with the glue, i.e., doesn't dissolve, and
B) bonds reasonably to the respective glue.

Some plastic enclosure materials do qualify, while other do not. If the 
material isn't known, it's best to try on a small sample before ruining 
the entire enclosure.
