In the end I bought an M-Audio Transit.

It was a minor hassle getting working because it needs firmware uploaded to
it.  http://usb-midi-fw.sourceforge.net/ has a firmware loader but it took
me a while to track down that my mythbuntu distribution didn't mount the
usbfs by default.  Once that was mounted everything starting working.
