Thanks Nick - I  didnt realise that!
Turns out that using the Alternate CD was my issue..  I also  didnt 
realise that it was quite different than the Desktop one, not just the 
removal of the live cd functionality. Now I have the Desktop CD and have 
reloaded and it all seems much better! now to take it home and scan for 
channels..
