Ok, a little bit more hacking and I'm getting some encouraging results.
I went through that entire channels.conf and got something from the MTS
channel.
Using that, I hacked it into a file like this:
T 666000000 8MHz 3/4 3/4 QAM64 8k 1/16 NONE
and ran
dvbscan -v -v test
Which found SEVEN CHANNELS!
TV
ONE:666000000:INVERSION_AUTO:BANDWIDTH_8_MHZ:FEC_3_4:FEC_3_4:QAM_64:TRANSMISSION_MODE_8K:GUARD_INTERVAL_1_16:HIERARCHY_NONE:270:320:1200
TV2:666000000:INVERSION_AUTO:BANDWIDTH_8_MHZ:FEC_3_4:FEC_3_4:QAM_64:TRANSMISSION_MODE_8K:GUARD_INTERVAL_1_16:HIERARCHY_NONE:271:321:1201

TVNZ

TVNZ SPORT
EXTRA:666000000:INVERSION_AUTO:BANDWIDTH_8_MHZ:FEC_3_4:FEC_3_4:QAM_64:TRANSMISSION_MODE_8K:GUARD_INTERVAL_1_16:HIERARCHY_NONE:274:324:1204
TV3:730000000:INVERSION_AUTO:BANDWIDTH_8_MHZ:FEC_3_4:FEC_3_4:QAM_64:TRANSMISSION_MODE_8K:GUARD_INTERVAL_1_16:HIERARCHY_NONE:450:400:1300
C4:730000000:INVERSION_AUTO:BANDWIDTH_8_MHZ:FEC_3_4:FEC_3_4:QAM_64:TRANSMISSION_MODE_8K:GUARD_INTERVAL_1_16:HIERARCHY_NONE:451:401:1301
So I copied these into /etc/mplayer/channels.conf
and ran mplayer dvd://"TVNZ 7"
cinema mplayer # mplayer dvb://"TVNZ 7"

Playing dvb://TVNZ 7.

So still no video ;-(
I have been using H.264 and AAC for quite some time, because I compress
into that format when I want to archive shows to DVD.
I still get the feeling I'm missing something important.
