/dev/video0 carries the mpeg stream and has both audio and video

Sadly no. It only has a single MPEG2 encoder so you can do either tuner
or composite or svideo

Setting up a VCR input is quite simple.
1. Setup a new source with no epg grabber, and call it VCR
2. Map the VCR input to the composite device
3. You need to setup a null channel change script if you want to perform
timed recordings
eg on myPVR we have a file /usr/local/bin/mypvr_dont_tune.sh which just
contains
#!/bin/bash
Then create a new channel and map it onto the VCR input.
