For those interested in the detail of the magnetic strip encoder circuit 

The circuit uses austria microsystems   AS5311 linear sensor            https://ams.com/as5311
and the LS 7366R 32 bit quadrature counter IC         https://lsicsi.com/datasheets/LS7366R.pdf

then I am currently using an ATmega328 to request or reset count from the LS7366R via SPI 


Peter Cabelo at auckland uni has built several systems using these IC’s 
check out his blog for his great write ups      https://pcm52.com


I have redesigned the pcb and code but essentially have followed his lead using the two IC’s together 
I’m happy to share with anyone interested
