You are quite right about not using their website/app.

I understand that someone has broken it to allow local control.
I need to find the reference, but it was talked about within element14 
community. (I've sent a message to someone)

re the PIR.
I used some cheap asian supplied thing.
It may have been these but I seem to recall two different shipments and 
the one I got didn't have the jumper.

Adding a small battery could be rather useful.
