My experience (and this was years ago) was that some of the core devs were
pretty abrasive personality-wise. They couldn't take any sort criticism or
dissent. It certainly put me off contributing and I'm sure I wasn't the
only one. I believe those guys are all gone now but it wouldn't surprise me
if there is still some influence from their attitudes in the dev culture of
the project.
