Further information after experimentation: If I boot the myth pc with or
without
the HDHR powered up it won't work when I record or go to live TV.
Running will let me scan channels and view with VLC but going
back into mythfrontend it still won't work (after running hdhomerun set up)

What does make it work is stopping the backend either by starting
mythbackend set up
and exiting immediately or by issuing sudo killall mythbackend ,then
starting
Myth front end and going to liveTV it is working.
