Yes, they're hacky solutions.  I've had most luck using MythTV Player 
for windows - version 0.6.0 seems to be the best one.

As you observed, there's always issues.   Trying to get users to mark 
and transcode ads is a big battle... I'm tempted to auto transcode but 
its not accurate enough.

The plan was to run proper mythfrontend in a VM now the new laptop has VT.
