Most comments I have seen on this sort of thing favour using something
like a smart remote where you can programme a button to send signals
to a number of devices, like "turn everything on and set the tv to
Bluray input and the amp to full surround" or "turn everything off" -
it doesn't rely on the devices communicating with each other, but on
the remote communicating with all devices.

Logitech springs to mind, but the remotes are not cheap!
