So what you're saying is that if I have Compiz enabled at all I'm going 
to get tearing as you helped me get VDPAU running?  And hence that I 
should disable it?  Whats the easiest way of doing that?  Removing 
compiz in Synaptic?

I wasn't even aware of what it is (I'm still a relative newbie to Linux) 
until just recently.  I think it was installed by default when I enabled 
the nVidia driver or when I upgraded to Jaunty.
