[mythtvnz] How to transcode Tv3 recordings so they will play on low end equipment?

I currently have only a DVB-T card in a PC  with 2.8Mhz single core processor.

I can view (and record and view later) channels like C4 etc, but TV1 2 and 3 are unwatchable as  they cause 100% CPU usage.

How do I go about transcoding my TV1, 2 or 3 recordings so I can watch them in standard definition?

I tried the transcode after recording option and chose low quality, the resultant was still jerky.

I guess one thing I don't know is, is the recording jerky in the first place due to my system being underpowered? How would I test this theory?
