Weird, intrepid default comes with 0.8.3.
I see that it comes in the backport repository

In any case; the issue you are seeing is not normal

Uninstall, complete-removal  lirc-modules-source

Then re-install, and do in a command line:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure lirc-modules-source

If you have errors there ; something else is wrong. You should ask in
the ubuntu forum...
