Update Manager does not seem to hook into the later 180.x series for me.
Is JVA's post of Sunday, 5 April 2009 9:29 a.m. the one you refer to, where he says:

Did you use the nvidia installer or a package?

If the first ; kill X with sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
run the nvidia installer to uninstall.

then type sudo rmmod nvidia to unload the nvidia driver

remove all nvidia.ko files that could still be in your /lib/modules/`uname -r`
with something like:
find /lib/modules/`uname -r` -exec sudo rm -f {} \; -print

Then re-run the nvidia installer.
Once done, type
modprobe nvidia
check in the system log that the correct module version is installed
and restart X:
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

I guess, to answer the first question, mythuntu uses the NVIDIA installer?

Which version of Mythbuntu are you using? I recently manually upgraded to 180.44 (See previous post with help from JYA), and then
subsequently the updater infomred me that 180.44 was availble in the repository and I re-did the install using the updater.
