I note there is also an option to "re-install" 180-.11, perhaps that might upgrade or perhaps it does as it says?!

This is only in reference to using the nvidia installer.

If you use a Ubuntu package ; you don't need to worry about any of this.

Just uninstall any of the existing nvidia-glx-* you may have installed.

And once done, install nvidia-glx-180

then restart X or reboot ..
