Communication and Navigation: Common
Mathematics

Edward Stansfield, Retired Technical Consultant

In this talk Edward will explain the basic principles of modern
communication and navigation systems. He will first show how the way
in which humans produce speech is exploited in the digital age,
leading to today’s proliferation of mobile telephones. He will then
show how the methods used by the early mariners have been updated in
modern navigation aids to provide safer transport on land, at sea and
in the air. He will draw attention to the fact that although these two
distinct technologies are seemingly very different, they actually
require similar mathematical algorithms for their operation.

This repeats the talk that Edward gave in December 2013 to a joint
IOP/IMA meeting at AWE in Aldermaston.

This event is free of charge and open to all, with refreshments at
19.00, lecture at 19:30.
