Precision Farming using Electronics - Andrew Herring, Southern
Harvesters

During the last 50 years, farms and the machinery used to work them
have both increased in size. Much of the equipment used today would be
unimaginable to previous generations of farmers. The drivers behind
these changes are the need to increase yield and to achieve the
necessary economy of scale to keep farming viable. This has led to the
concept of precision farming. An example is the use of GPS to ensure
that the amount of fertiliser applied to a crop is adjusted according
to the fertility of the soil as the machine passes across the field.
Another example is the use of electronics in combine harvesters to
adjust their setup so that the absolute minimum grain is wasted. This
talk will describe the role of electronics in precision farming and
how this has led to increased yields and efficiency.

This event is free of charge and open to all, with refreshments at
19.00, lecture at 19:30.
