Small, Large Scale and Distributed MIMO – Opportunities and Challenges

Tim Brown, Institute for Communication Systems, University of Surrey

Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technologies have been a useful
candidate in fourth generation mobile to increase spectral efficiency,
where the greatest challenges have been regarding the need to maximise
the number of antennas on a mobile terminal, with the additional
complexity of characterising the throughput over the air from a mobile
terminal. Moving towards fifth generation mobile, MIMO will move to
large scale and distributed deployments, which bring further
challenges.

In this lecture, Tim will talk from the perspective of the
implementation of the radio front end and the antenna design and what
limitations they may bring. Other matters for consideration using
multiple antennas will also be considered in in the lecture including
energy efficiency and exposure, which will be of importance to future
wireless systems.

This event is free of charge and open to all, with refreshments at 19.00, lecture at 19:30.

Thursday 22 January 2015 19.00 for 19.30

Palmer Building, University of Reading RG6 6UR
