Distribution Networks and the Smart Grid
Dr. Ben Potter, University of Reading
Distribution networks, which bring electricity from the national transmission network to
homes and business, will be on the front-line during the roll-out of the smart grid. The
electrification of heat and transport, combined with clustered uptake of such technology,
will lead to much higher peak levels of electricity demand at lower voltage levels in the
distribution networks.
This talk will cover some the challenges that will be faced by distribution networks over the
coming decades of smart grid deployment, and will also describe some of the innovative
projects that are being carried out to meet these challenges including the use of energy
storage systems in local neighbourhoods.
This event is free of charge and open to all, with refreshments at 19.00.
Thursday 27 February 2014 19.00 for 19.30
