TINA - The Intelligent Airport Project

Professor Jon Crowcroft, University of Cambridge

Thursday 22 April 2010 19.00 for 19.30

Gordon Theatre, Systems Engineering, University of Reading RG6 6UR

Could you build a network covering one square kilometre to support 10 million mobile devices
and a peak data-rate of 100 Gb/s?

Probably not, but this is what large airports will need in the very near future.

Wireless base stations, surveillance cameras, security equipment, displays and terminals are
already in use. GSM, 3G and TETRA coverage is intense. Future requirements include
portable equipment ranging from millions of RFID tags to thousands of high-end streaming-
media entertainment systems carried by passengers. The network must provide reliable
service to all of these devices as well as tracking their locations to within a few metres.

No current network can support mobile communication at this density and scale. The TINA
project is working towards an intelligent, adaptive and self-organising wired/wireless
infrastructure which will have applications in all high-density environments.

This event is free of charge and open to all, with refreshments at 19.00.
