The Thames Barrier – Upgrading the Tidal Monitoring Telemetry System
John Walker, Environment Agency
Thursday 26th February 2009 at 19:30
Cantley House Hotel, Milton Road, Wokingham
Light refreshments available from 19:00-19:30
Since its opening by the Queen in 1983 the Thames Barrier has
operated 109 times (to 22nd March 2008) to prevent London from
flooding. Monitoring the tidal cycle from the estuary, through the
Capital and as far upstream as Teddington, is a vital component in
determining when to close the Barrier. The work recently completed on
upgrading the Tidal Telemetry System is one aspect of the ongoing
preparations to protect London for the foreseeable future.
The lecture will briefly touch on the purpose of the Barrier and then
look at the complex technical issues involved in upgrading the
Barrier’s tidal monitoring system whilst still maintaining full
operational capability.
If you want to know more, come along. All are welcome and no ticket
is required. Simply turn up on the night. For more details please
contact Dr Richard Mitchell at rjmitchell at theiet.org, or 0118 378 6790
Directions: From Rectory Road (on one-way system – with Waitrose),
turn left at lights into Glebelands Road, follow the road bearing
right into Milton Road, go straight over the mini roundabout: the
Hotel entrance is 200 yards later on the right. See also
