Railway Safety & Control

Doug Steptoe - Systems Engineering Manager, Transport Projects, Thales

Thursday 28th April 2005 at 19:30

Brunel University Lecture Centre, Uxbridge

Light refreshments available from 19:00-19:30

Railway safety relies on the integrity of the train control systems to
ensure that trains don’t pass red signals or exceed operating
parameters. Train Control systems vary in complexity from simple
safety override devices to complex full train control systems. This
talk will cover the development by Thales of two different systems.
The relatively simple Train Protection and Warning System (TPWS)
reacts to Trackside stimuli and intervenes if a train has passed a
signal at danger (SPAD) or is overspeeding.

The new and more complex New Autodriver Box (NADB), developed for
Metronet Rail BCV to use on the Victoria Line, uses positional and
signalling inputs to control the train motors and brakes, taking the
train from station to station and stopping within a pre defined
stopping zone with no driver intervention. The talk will deal with the
issues surrounding the development, testing and approval of train
control systems, including the challenges of real life testing.

If you want to know more, come along. All are welcome and no ticket is
required. Simply turn up on the night. For more details please contact
Dr Richard Mitchell at rjmitchell@iee.org, or 0118 378 6790
