>From Captain Hook to Robocop - The progress of prosthetics

Dr Peter Kyberd

Department of Cybernetics, The University of Reading
Thursday April 25th 2002 at 19:30

Gordon Lecture Theatre, Department of Engineering,
Whiteknights Campus, The University of Reading

Light refreshments available from 19:00-19:30

Synopsis
We are all familiar of the image of the hook and peg leg of the seafarers of old as
well as the gleaming titanium and chrome image of the prosthetic supermen of
modern fiction. For as long as some humans have been loosing parts of their limbs
there have been others who have tried to replace them. Until recently the standard
provision of artificial limbs has owed more to Captain Hook then Sergeant Murphy.
The pace of change has been limited by the severe constraints that the application
has placed on the design (weight, power and most importantly, cost). Over the past
ten years, with the rise of more compact electronics, batteries and motors, it is
finally becoming possible to imagine a time when the technology will be routinely
applied to this field.

The talk will look at the history of prosthetics, discuss the requirements as to what
is possible today and look forward to the future of this field.

If you want to know more, come along. Everyone is welcome and no ticket is
required. Simply turn up on the night.
