An example; from the faq for less at http://www.greenwoodsoftware.com/less/

Why doesn't less work with Linux 2.6.9?
There appears to be a bug in the Linux 2.6.9 release which causes
/dev/tty to be created as a directory instead of a character file as it
should be (it appears that /dev/pty was inadvertently renamed to
/dev/tty). Reportedly, upgrading to the latest udev package will fix this.
