So, OWASP NZ are keen to help. I assume some of you know Codecraft, so we should ask them if anyone there would like to help organise a local OWASP meetup in conjunction (i.e. so I don't end up holding all the responsibility!). Who's the active organisers of Codecraft?

Hi, Jim--

It's great to hear from you, and I'm thrilled there's interest.

I personally think it would be great to get OWASP activities going in Dunedin. So far, we've stuck with a single OWASP Chapter for New Zealand, with local area leaders, rather than creating separate local chapters. Even though that's not the "normal" OWASP model, it seems to work well here, given the size of the overall AppSec community.

For one-offs - say, a single evening Meetup or a half-day "mini conference" - we could work with the existing organisation to create, promote, and support them as OWASP events.

To create an ongoing "presence" in Dunedin, the main requirement would be a commitment by someone (you, I suspect?) to do the following:
 * Sign on as an OWASP NZ chapter leader (which gets that person an @owasp.org email address), and pitch in on the (few) admin tasks; 
 * Manage and promote a local Meetup at least three times a year (OWASP's standard for "local meetings")
   * Each Meetup can have its own schedule and format. In Auckland, I devote about 30 minutes to one of the OWASP Top 10, and try to bring in a speaker for about an hour of presentation and discussion, with pizza and drinks in between.
   * We've talked about - but haven't yet done - "circuit rider" presentations, where one of us does a local talk, then travels to the other locations to present it again at those Meetups. We have the funds to support that, at least a couple of times a year.
   * The OWASP Foundation has an Enterprise account with Meetup, so we don't have to pay for Organizer subscriptions.
 * Promote participation in other OWASP activities around the country: OWASP NZ Day conference, security.ac.nz, and OWASP Training Days, so far; and
 * Be a general evangelist for OWASP projects and tools ("There's an OWASP tool for that!")
My thinking is that a good approach would be:
 * Find a date, time, and location for an Information and Interest Session in Dunedin - some time in March or April should work well
 * Get the Foundation to create a Meetup group for OWASP NZ-Dunedin, and nominate the point person (you?) as a co-Organizer
 * Announce the start-up effort at the February conference
 * Publicise the new group, and the Information Session, starting in early March - through the Chapter's mailing list (new-zealand-chapter at owasp.org), InfoSecNZ Slack, and Twitter
