BTW we have seen this in the past if there's another app accessing the device 
and stealing some of the packets while you're trying to verify the device (any 
chance you still have something running that thinks it's grabbing random 
data?)

These days networkmanager (usually) knows better than to poke at OneRNGs this 
way (unless you're running a really old distro) but if you have something else 
running that's poking at serial/network devices (they sort of look the same at 
some levels - there is one USB spec that tries to provide for both) to try and 
set them up it could also be creating this sort of problem
