The monopoly has other options at their disposal. Whether you then want
to help cement the monopoly is an ethical and stretegic consideration.

For email, the local ones seem to be whatever goes back to Voyager
(1stdomains, Net24), and SiteTech/MyHost. I've tried out 1stdomains and
their email hosting is reasonable, reliable, and they're responsive. 
All emailproviders fall own somewhere in one particular feature you
might want, so your only option is to know what you want, look at their
specs, and then contact them for the remaining questions. They all suck
hamsters when it comes to supporting aliases for spam and privacy
protection.

If you don't need to be that local (it'd be hard to be any less
local...), I can highly recommend both posteo.nz and mailbox.org.
They have different feature sets. Both are in Berlin, and operate on
ethics, not profits, e.g. their transparency reports are worth reading.

I've been thinking of giving a presentation on all this. Next meeting?
