Back in the old day, yes my first receiver was a valve amp (after crystal
sets) I read that transistors have distortion in odd harmonic frequencies
range and valves in even range. Our ears happily accept even harmonics but not
odd. It was common to see valve amps with 10% distortion figures quoted and
transistor with 0.01 % 

When you overdrive valves, as the base guitarists did, it really didn't sound
that bad. 

Roll on valves.
