All,

MM has a small pile of 2950s, and part of the puzzle was 'how difficult 
are they to configure'. They also are 24 port, and more to the point, 
have 19" rack-ears.

Making the RS232 adapter was the easy bit.

Have now been through all 24 ports using ping, and everything appears to 
work as hoped. Oh, and now I have enough knowledge on the subject to be 
dangerous :)

Thanks for the offers of unmanaged switches, things are under control 
(yeah right).
