[chbot] Open street map on adroid

Someone confirmed at the last meeting that it is possible to download
the OSM data in advance. That would only be efficient if it was vector
data and then rendered on the phone.

Looking at
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Android
is a tad overwhelming. Also,
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Navit
suggests that at least for that app the OSM data has been repackaged.

It would obviously be desirable to have apps for general map, car
navigation, etc to all share the data.

What apps are people using exactly for car navigation, and general NZ
map display?
Can someone give a quick outline of how the OSM data download is
performed (so it is usable by apps afterwards)? It doesn't seem so
straightforward, but may be trees, woods, seeing.
I want to use all of this without an Internet connection being required
after initial setup/

Thanks muchly,

Volker

PS NZ topo maps stored on the phone would be cool too...
