Ah, thanks for the pointers to "Spirits of Salts"--I had tried the
name "muriatic acid" when I went around the hardware stores but no one
knew it by that name.

As to why use it in preference to Ferric chloride, the recommendation
I've seen is that it's "better". e.g.
