I have just been to Molten media http://www.molten.org.nz/ who reprocess
second hand computer parts, and electronic scrap. Good place to pick up
some things - they are on Wordsworth Street, just near junction with
Waltham Road.

They have 6x AA NiMH batteries for $1 if you buy them still glued inside
the Tait battery packs (never used) although you would need to break the
pack open yourself to get them (ask which battery pack - there is more
than one kind - They have big boxes of them so if you want quite a few
it would be a good way to get them). They also have them loose - 6
1500mAh NiMH batteries for $3.

Old printers & CD-ROM drives for small motors and stepper motors. You
can pay scrap prices, but you need to buy 5 to ten of them and you would
pay $5 more or less for the lot (depending on what you are getting). If
you want to do this, know what you want beforehand as you need to talk
to the manager and he doesn't want to piss around.

They have some 7.2V NiCad battery packs for cheap - not new but look
decent.

Be aware that generally I think that what they have in their shop is
overpriced.
