It indicates that you edited the file using an editor that creates backups
with that naming scheme, e.g. vi, emacs, nano etc. When you edit a file the
original gets saved with a tilde appended.

Because you configured it to look for that filename. I can't remember
exactly how it works in mythtv-setup, maybe using the arrow keys in that
particular field cycles through the files in the specified directory or
something like that.
