My suggestion about putting some brief comment in the signature footer
was intended to minimise the time anyone spend on this, I appreciate
that the list is hosted on an open source basis and one way to help it
continue is not to put too many demands on the host. I'd love to put up
a wiki page (google might donate here) that gives guidance to new
listers however its not going to happen in a hurry and it might be good
to have some support and agreement for the idea. Sufficient content may
have been noted by Chris Bannister (good points for me Chris, just need
a resource efficient way to make them available) On the other hand the
list size is relatively small and relatively personal - it may be felt
it should continue that way.

I continue the question because on balance I think it would lead to more
efficient use of the list and list member time.

For me it is as fundamental as RTFM. (Google works well if that
abbreviation is new to the reader)

Beyond that I would have a glimmer of hope that if a user posted the url
to the manual there is some prospect they might have at least glanced
over it, and you never know, they might even acquire answers to some of
their questions, possibly even advancing their question. It wouldn't be
the first time...and isn't that what we'd all want?

Beyond that is puts out useful google bait and experience that will help
other users in ways that might not be predicted at the time of the posting.
