I think flaky is not too unkind a word to use regarding the analogue 
side. I have finally succeeded in recording an old VHS tape after a few 
attempts. I have my setup like this:

VCR-->composite vid+audio-->DVD Recorder-->s-video+audio-->HVR-2200

Second to last trial failed to accept the signal from the VCR even 
though the port worked with other signals. Had to reboot to recover the 
analogue. After the reboot I started myth recording a "good" signal then 
switched the DVD recorder input to the VCR and all seems good. I suspect 
the SAA7164 MPEG encoder may be a bit fragile.

I got these errors in mythbackend.log when the 2nd last attempt failed:
