AFAIK & The way I look at is :

MythTV frontend(s) & backend(s) are all clients with respect to the
mysql server.
There is (only) one mysql server database for a cluster of myth boxes.

Myth frontends are 'sort-of' clients w.r.t. backend.

I don't think the frontend-backend relationship is client server in the
strict sense.

Any frontend (or mythweb user) can initiate the recording from some
tuner in the backend collection (>=1).

A standalone combined frontend master-backend can get by with the IP
address 'localhost' but all other arrangements need to use real name or
IP address.
