I get full BIOS and boot scrawl. 8600 GT PCIe (so, offboard) with
DVI-HDMI adapter. TV reports various resolutions as it boots, 720x480
seems quite common. However, my TV's EDID does report a full range of
resolutions, so it's entirely possible that's why it works.
