I have built ffmpeg and mplayer binaries with vaapi support which is the
standard api for interacting with any of the vendor extensions going
forward.

You should see vdpau disappearing into the background as the vaapi
interaction layer matures. At the moment using the vdpau -> vappi interfaces
results in issues, I have not seen the same thing with the recently exposed
ati api (which name skips my memory).
