If you are using Ubuntu, try using Mythbuntu-control-centre to enable
mysql on the network interface.

Also where you have done:

$sudo mysql -u root -p

to log into mysql, try doing this from a remote frontend and swap 'root'
for the username of the mythtv database (also the password obviously).
That way you'll be able to figure out whether you can access the
database over the network.

PS what happened to your existing backends?
