If you have a beast of a CPU, or an nVidia card and you are happy to
play with VDPAU, H.264 would be as good as you can get for the filesize.
  I don't know how hard it is to set up an x264 transcoding profile on
MythTV, though.

If your machine is more modest, MPEG4 with 4 motion vectors and "High
Quality" always worked well for me and is built-in to MythTV properly.
