[mythtvnz] How do I get smooth playback on DVB-S

I have recently switched from Sky, to Mythtv with a Nova-S 500 tuner
card. My setup is now almost perfect in terms of usability, however I'm
still bugged by the quality of the video playback. It doesn't seem as
clear as Sky. I'm not sure whether this is a difference between "pure"
Freeview and Sky (I doubt it), my being overly sensitive (I also doubt
it as my wife has commented on the same), an inherent limitation in
having an HTPC (I hope not) or something that can be fine-tuned through
settings.
My observations are that the video is not smooth particularly with fast
moving or panning shots, especially obvious when you get ticker tapes
running along the bottom of the screen like in the breakfast show, and
seems slightly pixilated and also blurry.
What are others experiences with this? I've got no Freeview set top box
to compare it to.
My playback profile is set to Normal, and I haven't changed it. What are
others using for a playback profile? I do find that during playback the
video is slightly smaller than the panel, so I've applied a 3% scale in
Mythtv settings.
My setup is:
- Single Frontend/Backend
- Ubuntu 8.10
- Asus EN8500GT Silent graphics card
- Sony 40" LCD
- DVI->HDMI driving the TV
- Asus MOBO - can't remember which one
- Intel Core2 Quad processor
- 4GB RAM
